Ants
While there are many pests which are far worse than ants, ants can also create their fair share of problems around your home or office building. Ants are one of the most thriving insects on the planet, and with different species numbering into the thousands, they are known to be one of the most prolific creatures on Earth. Usually, they tend to enter the home looking for sources of food such as spilled starch and sugary items. Sometimes when it’s really hot, they come inside homes looking for water. Ants are known to infest areas around the house including garages, kitchens, storage areas, and other places. It’s important to correctly identify different ant species as they have different behaviors. Nixtermite knows how to solve ant problems regardless of the species. Spiders
Spiders are a common pest found in homes. Although they mostly thrive in places that people spend less time in, such as basements, attics, garages, and storage spaces, if left unchecked they can cause problems in the home. Different spider species vary greatly in size, appearance, and behavior. Most spider species are harmless to humans. However, there are some which can be very dangerous to humans, particularly the elderly and children. If you are concerned about a spider problem take note of the size of the spider’s body, color, and general behavior such as where you see them and what time of day you see them. We will help you find and eradicate your spider problem. Call us today to set up your free home evaluation at (619) 472-6666.
Fleas
Fleas are truly one of the most annoying pests. They usually attach themselves to common household pets such as dogs and cats. Once they have established a base of operations, they will start to bite humans. The easiest way to notice whether you have fleas in your home, besides getting bitten yourself, is when you start noticing your pets constantly itching and scratching themselves. Ridding your home of fleas can be a very involved process, and we at Nixtermite will help you every step of the way. Call us today to set up your free home evaluation at (619) 472-6666.
Roaches
Cockroaches are the most common insect pests infesting homes, food service establishments and other structures in California. They are large and omnivorous insects that are capable of transmitting disease, which causes food poisoning. Recently, cockroaches have been found to be the source of a highly common allergen in people, second only to house dust. There are many species of roaches but the German cockroach is by far the most common roach found in homes. Other types of roaches include the Oriental and American cockroaches that usually prefer dark, damp areas such as basements, floor drains, crawl spaces, and utility closets. Cockroaches typically become established in homes after being introduced in grocery bags, with laundry, or, in some cases, wandering in from outdoors. Once cockroaches become established they are prolific breeders, capable of producing several thousand offspring in a year. Call us today to set up your free home evaluation at (619) 472-6666.
Rodents
The term “rodent” encompasses both mice and rats. Rodents are night-traveling creatures, known to eat and contaminate food as well as damage buildings and other property by gnawing and burrowing into structures. They may also spread diseases (such as salmonella) that affect people and pets.
Mice are commonly found in homes and can live for up to 18 months. They range in length from 5 to 8 inches and can weigh up to 1 ounce. Females can produce anywhere from 36 to 192 offspring per year. Rats, specifically the Norway rat, are commonly found in urban and suburban areas of North America. They range in length from 13 to 18 inches and can weigh up to 11 ounces. Females can produce anywhere from 35 to 85 offspring annually. The average rat will live up to a little under a year. Rats have been known to transmit diseases such as the plague and tuberculosis. Bees and Wasps
Bees and wasps are stinging insects in the order Hymenoptera. Their stingers are modified egg-laying apparatuses, so only females can sting. Social wasps, honey bees, and bumble bees live in colonies. Individuals in the colony are responsible for defending the nest. If the nest is disturbed, these individuals will defend it by stinging. Foraging members of the colony will also sting if they are disturbed or injured. Bees and wasps should only be controlled when they are damaging property or endangering people. Too often, bees and wasps are killed when they pose no threat and may be beneficial. For instance, the large, dark, hairy wasps seen hovering over lawns may be digger wasps, which generally don’t attack people but are very useful in getting rid of beetle grubs that attack grass.
Even when bees and wasps are really pests, homeowners should be wary about tackling them because of the risk of people being stung. Some over-the-counter pesticides make bees and wasps more aggressive and may cause them to surge out of their nests, stinging not only the pesticide applicator but anyone else nearby. Some pesticides may also make treated nests repellent, so that bees and wasps mill around disoriented, perhaps entering nearby buildings and causing a greater nuisance.
